The Breman Museum will open exhibition: “Return to Rich’s: The Story Behind the Store” Nov 17th

By Collin Kelley INtown Editor.
For Atlanta natives, Rich’s is a sorely-missed department store with fond memories of shopping trips, Christmas wonder and tasty food. The late, great journalist and humorist Celestine Sibley wrote a book about Rich’s called Dear Store back in 1967, a testament to how much the retail mecca meant to the city.
While Rich’s would eventually branch out to mall stores, be gobbled up by a conglomerate and then disappear altogether, the Downtown flagship store on Broad Street was always the beating heart of the company. Thanksgiving night meant crowding onto Forsyth Street under the Crystal Bridge that connected Rich’s two buildings for the lighting of the Great Christmas Tree. Children eagerly sat on Santa’s lap then went to the roof of the building to ride the Pink Pig monorail. Lunch at the Magnolia Room was always a special outing for generations of families. On Nov. 17, the Breman Museum will open the exhibition, “Return to Rich’s: The Story Behind the Store” that will bring all the memories back for those who remember the store and educate those who never got to visit. more.
The Breman Museum is located at 1440 Spring St. For more about the Rich’s exhibit and concert series, visit The Breman.org

Decatur to weigh moratorium on tree removal, demolitions

From the ajc

Decatur to weigh moratorium on tree removal, demolitions
 By Bill Banks

Decatur’s City Commission will vote Monday on a proposed 90-day moratorium on the removal of healthy trees on private property and the demolition of single-family homes.

The vote follows recent commission meetings where a number of residents have expressed concern over a perceived escalation of “in-fills,” or the razing of smaller, older homes and replacing them with larger homes, some as tall as three stories. These “McMansions,” opponents say, are inconsistent with the city’s neighborhood feel, its aesthetics and architectural history.

“We’re continually seeing, over the last year or 18 months, more homes maximized for floor area and lot coverage,” City Planner Amanda Thompson said. “But how much more is something we have to figure out.”

Play for Middle Schoolers at the Alliance

The Alliance is excited to announce our upcoming production developed for middle school students based on their experiences and the stories of Grimm’s Fairytales.  THE GRIMM LIVES OF THE INBETWEENS is a fairytale-middle school mash up of knights on bicycles, princesses with braces, bullies and jocks, and so much more. Using digital storytelling, interactive theatre techniques, and quirky renditions of classic tales, this show will bring to life a contemporary Middle School experience from the students’ point of view.

The Alliance is also thrilled to be a part of the City of Atlanta’s Office of Cultural Affair’s “Cultural Experience Project.”  The Cultural Experience Project was launched to afford every Atlanta Public School (APS) student from pre-kindergarten through 12th grade the opportunity to experience the city’s premier art and cultural venues. Through the CEP, all sixth graders in APS will have the opportunity to see THE GRIMM LIVES OF THE INBETWEENS – making it one of the only cultural experiences offered by the program that is developed specifically for students in their age category.

There are only two public performances of this show, so get your tickets soon!  Performances are Monday, October 28, 7:00pm, and Monday, November 4, 7:00pm.  The Official Opening Performance is October 28, 7:00pm.  Adult tickets are $20 and children tickets are $15. Tickets are available online at www.alliancetheatre.org/grimmlives or by calling 404.733.5000.

Chastain Park Arts Festival November 2 and 3

 Lisa Windle sends this in.
Hello,

I'd like to add the following event to your events calendar. It is a free Art Festival, and open to the public. The information is listed below:

Bursts of Color Welcomes Fifth Annual Chastain Park Arts Festival November 2 and 3 in Atlanta, Georgia

The Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces is proud to announce the Fifth Annual Chastain Park Arts Festival on November 2nd and 3rd in Atlanta, Georgia. This event will feature 185 fine artists and artisans along the tree lined Park Drive, turning Chastain Park into a living gallery for the weekend.

Visitors will enjoy fine art and crafts, a children’s area and local food and beverage concessions including the “gourmet” food trucks. Local acoustic musicians will enliven the atmosphere in addition to a special VIP Tent. This event is organized by the Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces and volunteer artists. Best of all, it’s entirely free to attend!

The Chastain Park Arts Festival is a two-day outdoor event with an emphasis on the visual arts. Located in the largest public park in Fulton County, we set out with many different goals in mind: 1) Give back to the community through art; 2) Create a venue that emphasizes local and Georgian artists so they have a show they can depend on in their own back yard; 3) Bring a festival to the folks in the northern part of Fulton county; 4) Create a festival for Artists by Artists, letting the artist have a voice in the creation and operations of the festival; 5) Create a show unlike any other in the City of Atlanta, bringing together outstanding local, regional and national artists.

The Chastain Park area is rich with one of the largest and most enthusiastic art buying communities in the Atlanta area. More than 20,000 visitors are expected over the weekend to view the many painters, photographers, sculptors, leather and metal craft persons, glass blowers, jewelers and more! The Festival will also offer visitors the opportunity to view artist demonstrations, enjoy live entertainment, participate in hands-on art activities, and enjoy festival foods and beverages.

The festival benefits a scholarship fund for local artists administered by the Georgia Foundation for Public Spaces.

Location:
4469 Stella Dr., Atlanta, GA 30327 (inside upper Chastain Park on Park Drive)

Times:
Sat., November 2, 2013 from 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.
Sun., November 3, 2013 from 11:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Fall Festival on Ponce 2013

Third Annual Fall Festival on Ponce: Fall Never Looked So Good

The Atlanta Foundation for Public Spaces is proud to announce its Third Annual Fall Festival on Ponce coming up October 19th and 20th in Atlanta, Georgia.

The Fall Festival on Ponce is an Atlanta arts and crafts festival held in the historic Olmsted Linear Park. Visitors will enjoy the gorgeous landscape designed by one of America's most celebrated landscape architects, Fredrick Olmsted Sr. , which was carefully restored by the Olmsted Linear Park Alliance. An estimated 20,000 visitors will attend this event with over 125 displays of fine art and crafts, folk and "outsider art." In addition to the abundance of unique art, there will be a children's area, local gourmet food, beverages and a small stage for acoustic musical performances. Attendance is Free.

This is the third year that AFFPS will hold an outdoor arts and crafts festival in the chain of parks on Ponce de Leon Ave in the historic Druid Hills neighborhood. This event will be very conservative, with sensitivity and consideration for the park and surrounding neighborhood.
AFFPS and the Fall Festival on Ponce will be partnering with the Greater Atlanta Hadassah Chapter to help raise funds for the Hadassah Medical Organization. HMO is internationally renowned for its pioneering medical research, which benefits people in every corner of the world. Facelift for Plaza Theatre

 From : encoreatlanta.com

Facelifts in store for Plaza, President theaters
By Encore Atlanta

Historic buildings in Atlanta and Manchester will undergo restoration, thanks to grant money from the Fox Theatre Institute.

The outreach program, created by the Fox Theatre, helps preserve historic buildings, revitalize arts programs and strengthen local economies. It will do so this fiscal year at Atlanta’s Plaza Theatre and Manchester’s President Theatre. Some details:

At the Plaza, grant monies will help restore the theater marquee, changing it from fluorescent to LED lighting and doing away with rust. The Plaza will look better from the street and be much more eco-friendly. The work will be done in time for the theater’s 75th anniversary.

At the President, FTI funds will finance complete reconstruction of the theater façade, from the marquee to the top of its tower and spire. The restoration will emphasize returning the President to the art deco jewel it was in 1935. Manchester, a city of less than 4,000, is in extreme middle-west Georgia, in Meriwether County.

Some theaters need assistance remodeling their lobby or auditorium. Some want to learn about sales and marketing, or need assistance with programming and ticket sales. Some want to train in-house restoration staff. The goal is to help these theaters become viable economic and cultural centers for the communities they’re in, much like the Fox has done under Atlanta Landmark’s guidance

The FTI’s previous projects include the Rylander Theatre in Americus; the Morton Theatre in Athens; the Imperial Theatre in Augusta; the Ritz in Brunswick; the Gem Theatre in Calhoun; the Springer Opera House in Columbus; the Holly Theatre in Dahlonega; the Grand in Fitzgerald; the Cox Capitol and Douglas theaters as well as the Grand Opera House, all in Macon; the Strand in Marietta; the DeSoto in Rome; the Emma Kelly in Statesboro; and the Ritz in Thomaston.

Before and after photos of recently completed projects can be seen HERE.

Help Pie Shop open in the Virginia-Highland neighborhood!

I read about this at Decatur Patch and wanted to help with this campaign, so I am posting about this to get the word out.
----

Hi neighbors! I own a bakery called Pie Shop that started in rented kitchen space in Decatur in 2010 and has been operating full-scale for 2.5 years in Buckhead. Happily, I just launched a crowd-funding campaign to bring Pie Shop back! We have been a well-loved destination in our current location but have many supporters in Decatur and surrounding neighborhoods who would like to see Pie Shop come closer. With your help we can be the next long-standing member of the community.

If you love pie, coffee, and happy places to sit and share those things with friends, please visit the campaign here: www.kickstarter.com/projects/416354093/p...

It runs for a very limited time and the clock is ticking so if you believe in this project please help me get the word out by sending this link to your friends.

I am happy to answer any questions!
Thank you,
Mims

The Kimball House to Open Soon

by Sonia Chopra
Kimball House in the historic Decatur Depot building, will open this fall. The Brick Store Pub and Leon's Full Service teams are behind the new restaurant and bar, which was inspired by turn-of-the-century American hotels and takes its name from the Kimball House hotel that was razed in the mid-1900s.

Both the kitchen and the bar will draw inspiration from the menus of old hotel bars and restaurants. Executive chefs Jeffery Wall and Philip Meeker, who met on the line Joel, will develop the food menu. "Dishes will show classic French techniques while still remaining playful," and the menu will showcase oysters and fresh fish.

Miles Macquarrie of Leon's is creating the cocktails— both classics and "culinary-inspired" originals— and the list of spirits, which includes absinthe and sparking and fortified wines. Michael Gallagher of Leon's and Brick Store Pub is in charge of the wine list, and Kimball House will have a rotating selection of craft beers behind the bar.

The restaurant is currently in the build out phase— note the new white exterior in the picture above, compared to the previous dark green incarnation— and is currently hiring for all positions. The application can be found here.

National Shag Dance

Waiting for Balloon! at The Woodruff Arts Center October 17 – November 9.

Dear  Next Stop...Decatur

The Alliance is pleased to announce our first Theatre for the Very Young production of the 2013/14 season – Waiting for Balloon!  This encore production tells the story of two childlike hobo-clowns waiting near the railroad tracks for “balloon.”  The problem is that neither of them knows exactly what “balloon” is.  Through delightful trial and error, exploration and interaction with the audience, the two piece together what makes a balloon a balloon and celebrate all that is discovered while we “wait!”  Waiting for Balloon is a joyous introduction to gentle clowning and the joy of creating puppets from found objects, designed by the creative mind of Puppeteer Michael Haverty.

Theatre for the Very Young is an artistic experience for children ages 18 months – 5 years that overcomes age, language, and developmental barriers, expanding the consciousness of very young audience members and integrating bi-lingual elements into each show.  Each production nurtures creative thinking, allowing the very young to experience art and culture on their terms.

Waiting for Balloon runs at the Alliance from October 17 – November 9.  I hope you can share this information with your readers.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
