Enter Madison Ave thru Johnston Place beginning at 10:30. Look for the registration tent. An adult must check in for their child regardless of team grouping. Waivers must be signed before you proceed. DON’T FORGET YOUR HELMETS! NO HELMET, NO RIDE!

Fun, fun, fun… The vision of this event is picnic/parade style where families, friends and neighbors will be walking to the event with their chairs & blankets while snacking with their families and watching the Derby. For those of you who live on Madison Ave we hope you invite your friends, set up a tailgate style picnic and enjoy the day! All others are welcome to set up their picnic goods on the sidewalks up & down the street.
We will have a “donation station” with baked goods for (cash or check) donation, t-shirts for sale ($20 for Youth & Adult) and checkered flags (1 for $2.00 OR 3 for $5.00) and encourage you to spread the word to bring cash & checks ONLY.

Did you Catch The Krog St. Tunnel on MacGyver

CBS’s MacGyver (EYE) has been busy throughout August as well. After finishing July at the Georgian Terrace, the production moved to a set off of Dunwoody Club Drive. On August 10, they shot a market scene at Peachtree and Baker Streets downtown. Two days later, crews moved to the Westside, off Marietta Street. MacGyver moved back downtown, filming on Martin Luther King Jr. Drive, on August 20. For the past few days, filming has taken place in Smyrna, with a basecamp at Faith Christian Center on South Cobb Drive and Church Street.

BRTU Construction is installing new lane markings, traffic control barricades, and fencing to temporarily shift all vehicle traffic to two lanes on the east side of North McDonough Street. On-street parking will be eliminated during construction as well.

The North McDonough Streetscape Improvements include reducing North McDonough to 2 vehicle lanes, wider sidewalks, and a 2-way “cycle track” on the west side of the street, along with traditional streetscape improvements and on-street parking. The project will also feature “green infrastructure” improvements to improve storm water quality.

This is a newspaper article about the Grand opening of The Scott-Drive-In Theatre.

A new asset to Decatur's impressive list of modern business establishments has been added in the Scott Drive Theatre at the intersection of Scott Blvd and the Lawrenceville Hwy.
Set in a natural amphitheatre and partially enclosed by a cresent-shaped backdrop of trees, the new drive-in is one of the most beautiful anywhere in the south. It opened Monday.
With 550 automobile positions, the new outdoor movie has 12 parking ramps. Elevated and tilted to give the viewer just the right view of the screen, the ramps are close enough so that customers at the rear can get a clear picture.

Community Theatres Corporation who built the new drive-in have secured the very latest of equipment and designs for their movies.
Frederick G. Story, president of Community Pictures, says that the Scott's big concession stand is probably the best designed in this area.
We studied many oother drive-in concession stands and elimated all of their mistakes in ours he said.
Features of the concession house are the comfortable rest rooms, public telephones,cigarette machines and cafeteria style service.

The sound equipment the speakers which the drive-in customer hangs from his auto window is R C A which Mr. Story says is the best of it's kind. And he adds that the Scott's movie screen is the largest in the Metropolitan area.

The opening night had some 550 cars which is a full house.
1000 cars were turned away that first night.

North McDonough Streetscape Improvement

Work is beginning to crank up on the North McDonough Streetscape Improvement and the Railroad Crossing Improvements at McDonough and Candler. The City Commissioners have awarded a contract for the work to BRTU Construction of Forest Park. The total budget for the work is about $5.5 million, a little over two-thirds of which is from federal grants through the Atlanta Regional Commission and the Georgia Department of Transportation.

The North McDonough Streetscape Improvements include reducing North McDonough to 2 vehicle lanes, wider sidewalks, and a 2-way “cycle track” on the west side of the street, along with traditional streetscape improvements and on-street parking. The project will also feature “green infrastructure” improvements to improve storm water quality.
The Railroad Crossing Improvements address pedestrian accessibility and safety around and across the two CSX crossings at the intersections of College Avenue and Howard Avenue with Candler Street and McDonough Street. The work provides gentler slopes on the north side of both crossings resulting in an accessible path for persons in wheelchairs as well as a safer route for pedestrians and bicyclists located outside the railroad crossing gates. New traffic signals allowing protected left turns on all legs of the 2 crossings are to be installed as well.

Jimmy John's to Open in Emory Village

 Sandwich joint opening in Emory Village

Champaign, Illinois-based Jimmy John's Gourmet Sandwiches is coming to Emory Village.  The sub shop will occupy the former Chevron gas station on North Decatur Road.    

The approximately 2,000 square foot building is being completely renovated to suit the needs of the restaurant. (Local wine merchant Sherlock's had last year announced plans to open in the space but later abandoned them.)  

According to Emory Village Alliance, the gas station renovation will include the installation of new windows and other exterior and interior improvements including a kitchen and seating for about 20 inside, and patio seating for others outside.  When work is complete the site will reportedly have 13 parking spaces plus bike racks on the east and west side of the building. Cars will enter at the North Decatur Road entrance and exit on Oxford Road.

Join the DeKalb History Center to learn more about our home – the Historic DeKalb County Courthouse, with a focus on the fire that consumed it 100 years ago. The talk will include background information on Decatur’s square and why the courthouse is located here. Did you know that part of the current courthouse was built on the remains of the county’s fourth courthouse?  The History Center will cover the history and architecture of the 1898 courthouse and the fire which partially destroyed it in 1916. Learn about the changes made to the remains of the fourth courthouse in order to reopen it for court functions in 1918. The talk will conclude with a brief summary of the fifth courthouse’s history up to the present.

"Harley and the Davidsons" 3 Night Event on Discovery Channel Sept 5-7

While watching this I remembered a photo in the book Vanishing DeKalb of a early Indian Motorcycle who was a rival to Harley-Davidson Motorcycles.

 At his house on La France Street in Edgewood, Pierce Moore exhibits his favorite mode of travel.
Indian was the brand name of this World War I motorcycle rebuilt by Pierce and his brother George.

BACK IN THE DAY... (I always wanted to say that.) I was one of those kids who once took their lunch to school in those cool metal lunch boxes. Mine was "ZORRO" the one pictured here. All the kids at Winnona Park had them. Those were the days.

 Collecting is a great way to remember your childhood, so it is not surprising that old, metal lunch boxes have become popular collectibles.
 The idea of a tin pail or box to hold a lunch is not new. In the late 1800s, products like tobacco were sold in tin containers with handles so they could be reused as lunch boxes. The boxes were decorated with ads for the product. In those days, many men took a lunch with them to their work in factories, fields or offices.
 The tradition of the lunch box continued in the 1900s. In 1949, it is said, the makers of Aladdin vacuum bottles thought it might boost lunch box sales if they put a picture of a popular TV star on the box and the bottle. They added a decal of Hopalong Cassidy, and it sold so well that others followed. Roy Rogers, another TV cowboy, had a lithographed steel lunch box by 1953. More than 2 1/2 million were sold. The steel boxes remained popular in the 1950s and ’60s.
Hundreds of boxes picturing TV, movie and comic characters, and even popular toys, were made. In the 1970s, the Florida legislature passed a law outlawing metal boxes because they were dangerous–some were used to bash school classmates.
After that, lunch boxes were made of hard plastic or vinyl. They are still decorated with popular images, but they have lost some of their glamour. Metal boxes in excellent condition sell for hundreds of dollars each.

Former Bank to Bring New Tenants to Northlake

Southeastern Retail Development plans to bring two restaurants and a dental office to LaVista Road near Northlake Mall.  The project, which has been in the works since last year, is finally moving forward.  Current plans call for the new businesses to open late next spring.

The two story, nearly 8,000 square foot former First Union/Wachovia/Wells Fargo bank branch at 4070 LaVista Road will soon be demolished and replaced with two buildings.  Wells Fargo closed the branch last summer and directed customers to their other location, which is literally across the street. (Although a SLUP request from last year indicated the building would be retrofitted, it will in fact be demolished.)

A freestanding, 2,200 square foot building, closest to Northlake Mall, will house a new Starbucks Coffee shop and drive-thru.  The new location will reportedly serve as a replacement of the existing Starbucks sans drive-thru in nearby Northlake Festival.  (The current Starbucks occupies a portion of a former The Sport Shoe.)
 A separate building, which will be constructed beside the Starbucks, will house an approximately 2,100 square foot Willy's Mexicana Grill and a roughly 3,500 square foot Aspen Dental office. 

Willy's joins existing Mexican quick serve restaurants (QSRs) Chipotle Mexican Grill and Moe's Southwest Grill in the Northlake market.

Cousins Properties Close on Decatur's Callaway Building Site

Cousins Properties closed with the Decatur Urban Redevelopment Authority on the five-acre Callaway Building site in downtown Decatur late Friday afternoon. Assistant City Manager Lyn Menne wasn’t certain of the final costs, though Cousins will reimburse the city the $5.12 million it paid DeKalb County for the building two years ago.

Cousins will also reimburse the city for attorney fees and for interest on the bond Decatur issued to pay for the Callaway property.

Cousins’ planned a mixed-use project for the site including 329 apartments and a 40,000-square-foot, four-story structure, with a ground floor for retail and the upper three stories for office only. (Decatur hasn’t had a new downtown office building since 1991).
The closing came on the same day the Atlanta Journal-Constitution reported that five developers, including Cousins, received letters from DeKalb County saying the county sewer system lacks adequate capacity for their projects.

The letter was issued months after DeKalb initially reviewed the project and told Cousins that there was capacity, Menne said. As it stands, the developer now has to pay for both sewer upgrades and a tap fee of approximately $1,700 per unit to connect to DeKalb County Sewer.

Recently presented plans for a development near the Atlanta Beltline and Krog Street Tunnel have made some Beltline advocates and community members wary.

Notably, that group includes Beltline visionary Ryan Gravel, according to a recent post on local advocacy site ThreadATL.

Atlanta BeltLine Inc. and developers North American Properties presented the proposal at 670-690 DeKalb Avenue last week to members of the Inman Park Neighborhood Association, which according to ThreadATL seemed to have acceptable building materials, street-level activity, density, and brag-worthy 20-percent affordable housing.

Gravel reportedly told the group of residents and company representatives that, as presented, buildings on the current site plan "are beautiful, but they’re not designed with transit in mind." In fact, some worry the project could effective block a transit line.

Gravel said the proposed site plans for the project did not allow enough space for rail to run through alongside a trail, and a possible 1,000-foot tunnel with an S-curve in it (to be used in lieu of the Krog Tunnel) would only have enough room for transit, reports ThreadATL. This, in theory, could mean walkers and bikers would be S.O.L. Also, the added cost of building such a long tunnel — when a much shorter one had apparently originally been proposed — could be an impediment to making transit a reality in the first place, some argue.

Halt and Catch Fire Season 3 Tonight @ 9:00 on AMC

Halt and Catch Fire did something kind of incredible in its second season. After starting out as a run-of-the-mill, prestige-y period drama about a mysterious and difficult guy being mysterious and difficult (basically a B-, 1980s version of Mad Men), it hung a hard left between seasons and turned itself into a riveting series focused primarily on two women running an online video game company in the very early days of both online and video games. That… that was really something. Abrupt changes are easy. (“Quick, everybody do something else!”) Successful abrupt changes are much harder. (“Quick, everybody do something else… better!”) As the show makes its way into season three, it has another round of small changes up its sleeve, and with these changes in place, it solidifies its place in the upper echelon of TV dramas.

Arrowhead Investors, LLC plans to construct about 40 attached townhomes on Lawrenceville Highway near Hollywood Road.  The residences would be built on a nearly 4 acre parcel between Orion and Hollywood Drives, just south of North DeKalb Mall. 

The 3.78 acre parcel was approved for redevelopment in 2007 for a 98 room personal care facility.  The facility never happened and Atlanta-based RaceTrac attempted to have the property rezoned in 2012 for a gas station and convenience store, but abandoned their plans amid significant community opposition.  

Assorted documents related to the current proposal state different numbers of units, ranging from 40 t0 43.  Multiple calls placed to Brian Flint of Arrowhead Investors seeking confirmation of the current count were unanswered.

Unfortunately, 32% of Georgia’s 4th grade students read below grade level. Reading is Essential for All People (REAP) is a non-profit dedicated to improving reading proficiency in public school students through teacher training and enrichment. Teachers leave college without all the tools they need to reach all their readers. Shrinking school budgets and increasing time constraints make is difficult for teachers to access the necessary professional development required to meet all their readers’ needs once they are in the classroom. REAP provides teachers with specialized approaches to reading instruction that makes all readers stronger but are critical for those students who struggle.

Last month, Peruvians celebrated their Independence Day — a remembrance of the successful fight against the Spanish to regain Peruvian independence. What better way for Atlantans to celebrate Peruvian identity than to have a taste of true seafood ceviche the Peruvian way.

Ceviche (suh-VEE-chey) is a popular Latin American dish made of fresh raw fish cured by citrus juices and spiced with onions and herbs. In the U.S. we often serve ceviche as a shrimp appetizer with tortilla chips, but authentic Peruvian ceviche is the only rendition at Las Brasas.

Owners John and Maria Koechlin opened the original Las Brasas eight years ago on Howard Avenue in Decatur. After retirement, their son Michael turned Las Brasas into a destination by keeping the old favorites and incorporating some fresh, new dishes. After closing the Howard Avenue location, which is now home to the Doggy Dog hot dog stand, Las Brasas moved to a larger space just a few blocks away. The new location opened at 614 Church St. in fall 2015 and the restaurant plans to celebrate its one-year anniversary in the new space in late September.

While a large painted mural on the side of the building draws in diners initially, the addition of the family’s Peruvian ceviche recipe keeps them coming back.

Michael Koechlin personally picks up fresh seafood daily at Buckhead Beef and crafts his family’s ceviche recipe by hand. The restaurant’s most popular variety is the Ceviche Mixto ($17), which comes with tender flounder fillet, soft calamari, sliced octopus tentacles, and tiger shrimp is marinated with salt and lime juice. Then the mixture is topped with thinly sliced sweet onions and cilantro for a pop of freshness. Koechlin says the addition of popped cancha corn kernels and cold sweet potato slices served alongside offer a mellow respite from the ceviche's bold flavors.
